Watch the Sighting:

Ram Goyel and his family were out for a morning drive, on their way back from N’wanetsi Picnic Spot. As they rounded the corner on the H6, Ram halted his car, a large group of animals was making their way down the middle of the road!

A Heart-Stopping Sight

Based on the size of the group, Ram’s first thought was that the animals were a herd of impala, but as the animals approached, he couldn’t believe his eyes, it was a massive pride of lions! Ram quickly pulled his vehicle over to the side of the road to give the lions space to pass while he pulled out his camera!

He recounted that his arm was shaking with excitement as he filmed! Everyone was in utter disbelief that they had the sighting all to themselves!

One by one the lions strutted majestically down the road, totalling fifteen members! Even more surprising was that amongst the pride, there was a white lion, a very rare sighting!

All together, this encounter was extremely rare and special and Ram and his family were so grateful to have had a front-row seat!

Giving Space to Wildlife

Towards the end of the sighting, more cars showed up, pushing the lion pride off the road and into the bushes. Ram’s advice was to always leave space for wildlife, no matter the encounter.

“Just give space to the wildlife and be patient. Don’t intrude upon the animals” he stated.

This sighting teaches us that wildlife encounters are always more magical when experienced with patience and respect. Giving animals space allows for unforgettable moments, like a pride of lions strolling right toward you, turning an ordinary drive into an extraordinary memory!

How Big is a Lion Pride?

Contrary to popular belief, a lion pride is not necessarily a cohesive unit. The size and composition of a pride may fluctuate from time to time, and members may not be together at all times.

Members of the pride and sometimes small groupings within the pride may venture off and be widely scattered! With all of this considered, a lion pride can range in size from a few individuals to over forty individuals!

So how is the size of a pride counted anyway? It is actually based on the number of females present.

This is because male lions are nomadic, thus not forming a permanent members of the pride while female lions will remain in the pride that they were born into. Males on the other hand, will leave the pride between the ages of two and four years old, although still bonded forever to their litter-mates.

Ram’s sighting of 15 lions was incredible, so one can only imagine how spectacular it must be to witness a pride of over 40 lions!
