Mike Cowden, manager and director of Simbambili Game Lodge, was out with his group in the Northern Sabi Sand Nature Reserve where they were lucky enough to witness a leopard hunting a duiker. After making the kill, the cat took her prize and nestled into the tall grass to begin feeding as the group continued to look on.
There was no indication that anything was wrong. She fed steadily, occasionally glancing up to scan her surroundings, but otherwise seemed settled in for a long, undisturbed feast.
Little did everyone know that the excitement was far from over…
Everything Changes in a Split Second
Without warning, the leopard snapped to attention. She clamped her jaws around the duiker carcass and took off at full speed, carrying the weight of her kill as though it weighed nothing at all.
Just a few meters away stood a large tree, and she made straight for it. In one fluid motion, she scaled the trunk and disappeared into the upper branches, hauling the duiker along with her the entire way up.
Although it was first unclear what caused her to spook, Mike described the leopard as having “crazy agility”.
The Culprit Reveals Itself
The final moments of the footage explain the sudden dash. A hyena burst out from the bushes below, drawn in by the scent of the kill, and stood at the base of the tree staring hungrily up at the leopard and her meal, now well out of reach.
