A Careful Walk Back to Camp
Private guide Rodney Nombekana and his group had spent the afternoon following a leopard that had recently made a successful impala kill and hoisted the carcass into the safety of a tree. It’s a familiar tactic for keeping hard-earned meals away from opportunistic scavengers.

The footage picks up with the leopard walking cautiously down a dirt road at sunset, making its way back toward the tree where the kill was stashed. Everything about its posture suggested it knew something wasn’t quite right.
The Chase Is On
That instinct proved correct. In an instant, the leopard abandoned its calm stroll and bolted straight up the tree.

A heartbeat later, an adult hyena came sprinting into frame in hot pursuit. At first glance, it looked like the hyena was after the leopard itself, but the real prize was the carcass dangling in the branches above.
A Battle Just Out of Reach
With the leopard now safely perched, the hyena turned its full attention to the meal swinging tantalisingly close to the ground. It leapt again and again, each jump falling just short by a matter of inches.

Every attempt was met with sharp growls and swats from the leopard above, defending its meal with everything it had. The hyena kept trying, driven by the kind of persistence that has made the species notorious for scavenging kills from more skilled hunters.

But no matter how high it jumped, the carcass stayed just out of range. The video ends with the hyena pacing in frustration at the base of the tree, outsmarted by a leopard that had judged the height perfectly.

Why Leopards Take to the Trees
This kind of scene plays out across Africa’s bushveld more often than people realize. Leopards are solitary hunters and, unlike lions, have no pride to help defend a kill.

Hoisting prey into a tree is one of their most effective survival strategies, particularly in areas where hyenas and lions are common. Hyenas are powerful and can leap surprisingly high, but they lack the climbing ability of a leopard, which makes a well placed carcass almost impossible to steal.

It is a small but telling example of how much energy goes into simply keeping a meal once it has been caught.
A Reminder That Nothing Comes Easy
In the end, the leopard’s quick thinking paid off, but the encounter is a reminder that survival in the bush rarely stops once the hunt is over. Every kill brings a fresh set of challenges, and moments like this show just how much skill and awareness it takes to hold onto one.
