Among the most secretive of the great cats, leopards are well known for their solitary nature, their strength, and their ability to adapt to different landscapes.
While they usually avoid direct conflict with each other, there are moments when competition between them for territory, food, or mating rights escalates into fierce battles.
This was one such moment. A leopard pursued another, chasing it up a tree in an impressive acrobatic display, before the poor creature fled the scene.

Tree sets stage for impressive leopard confrontation
Leopards are incredible climbers, with powerful limbs, retractable claws, and an unmatched ability to balance even when carrying heavy prey up vertical tree trunks.
Trees are essential to their way of life because they provide safety from lions and hyenas, and are vantage points from which to scan the surrounding bush.
However, in this instance, what is usually a safe refuge for leopards, became something of a battleground.

Leopard chases ‘intruder’ up tree
One of the leopards clearly felt his territory had been violated, and chased after the ‘intruder’ at great speed.
This chase was made all the more impressive considering it was up a tree and across the tree’s branches. The leopards climbed at breathtaking pace. It was easy to forget they were climbing, since their movements up the tree were so effortless.

The air was tense as they made their ascent. The tree was familiar territory, judging by the ease with which they climbed. However, this territory clearly wasn’t big enough for the two of them, and the leopard which was doing the pursuing made a beeline for its rival.
Leopards rarely welcome the company of others, especially rivals of the same sex. Male leopards will defend their ranges with determination, marking trees with urine, scraping the earth, and roaring at night to establish their dominance. When those territorial boundaries are crossed, violence is never far away.
In this rare sighting, territorial boundaries had definitely been crossed and things were about to get interesting!

When the leopards had reached the top of the trunk, they then continued the chase along the tree’s branches. Relatively hidden from the spectators now, one could make out their frantic movement from behind the canopy of silvery branches and leaves.

Leopard rival falls to bushveld floor
Then, just like that, the leopard which was being chased tumbled to the bushveld floor! The poor animal literally fell like lightening!
Time seemed to pause a moment as the leopard gathered itself, now far beneath the branches of the tree.

Then, with that same lightening speed, it was off again! It was taking no chances in hanging around

Dominant leopard successfully chases rival away
The dominant male was not about to share its tree with another leopard and the intruder had no doubt learned its lesson the hard way.
It had performed impressive acrobatic and aerobatic antics, in climbing the tree and then in tumbling with relative grace, however, it had taken the hint and hopefully went off in search of unclaimed territory.
There are many trees in the bushveld and it was clearly not welcome here!
