While beautiful moments abound in Nature, some are hard to witness. In this video, a leopard toys with an injured impala lamb.
Nachi Mirkin submitted this challenging footage to Latest Sightings. They filmed the encounter while on a game drive in South Africa’s Kruger National Park.
Curiosity in the grass
As Nachi told Latest Sightings, he had come across a young female leopard while on a game drive. As he watched, he noticed the leopard was interested in something lying on the grass.
On closer inspection, he saw that it was an impala lamb. It would appear that the predator had managed to catch the antelope, but wasn’t quite sure what to do next.
Help or hindrance
Nachi said that the leopard seemed fascinated by the lamb. The cat was constantly pushing and prodding it, as if trying to get it to stand.
Nachi went on to explain, “But as I watched, it became clear that the leopard was just inexperienced and did not know how to kill and eat it.”

Frustrated by inexperience
At times, the juvenile leopard appeared frustrated by its own lack of experience. This is common with young predators.
Learning to hunt is an incremental process. In part, they learn by watching their parents, while the rest is a process of trial and error.
Injured lamb
As the youngster paws at the lamb, we see that there is blood on her leg. No doubt, this came from the impala when the leopard initially caught it.
Furthermore, it appears the lamb was crippled during the initial attack. While it can just lift its head, it cannot rise any further.
And when it does lift its head, it makes an already difficult sighting all the more heartbreaking. Nonetheless, it is important to remember that in Nature, human values do not apply.

In deep shock
As time passes, the leopard appears to be no closer to figuring out what to do next. Meanwhile, at her feet, the lamb is breathing heavily.
It may be of some comfort to know that, by this stage, the lamb is probably in a deep state of shock. As such, it probably feels no pain as its system struggles to survive.
Nevertheless, as predator and prey look into each other’s eyes, one can only wonder what each is thinking.
Fading fast
It is also a mystery why the young predator seems so determined to “help” the lamb to its feet. The most likely explanation is that she wants it to run so she can chase it.
As brutal as it sounds, for young predators, play is instrumental in their becoming efficient killers.
However, the lamb is fading fast. As the video ends, we can only hope that its suffering didn’t last much longer.
