A Predator in Waiting
Photographer Matt Walsh captured this tense encounter unfolding on a dirt road, where a leopard lay low in classic hunting position, body pressed flat against the earth. Its eyes were locked dead ahead on an impala grazing just a couple of meters away, completely unaware of the danger lurking so close by.
The leopard didn’t rush. It stayed motionless, reading the situation and waiting for the right moment to make its move. Impala are notoriously alert animals with sharp senses, so any premature movement could easily blow the entire hunt.
Timing Is Everything
At one point, the impala lowered its head to graze, an opening that might have tempted a less experienced predator into action. But the leopard held firm, resisting the urge to strike too early.
A few seconds later, the impala lowered its head again. This time, the leopard didn’t hesitate.
It began inching forward with remarkable stealth, using every bit of cover the road and surrounding bush offered. Leopards rely heavily on this slow, deliberate approach, closing the distance on their prey before committing to a final burst of speed.

Once the leopard judged the distance to be right, it launched into a full sprint, bolting straight for the impala in a burst of raw power and speed. For a predator built more for explosive short bursts than prolonged chases, this moment represented its best and often only chance at a kill.
Unfortunately for the leopard, the impala reacted instantly. Its reflexes kicked in the second the leopard broke cover, and it darted out of harm’s way before the leopard could close the distance and give proper chase.

This kind of outcome is far more common than many people realize. Leopards are solitary, opportunistic hunters, and their success rate is surprisingly low, with many studies estimating only around one in ten hunts actually ends in a kill.
