A Sighting That Doesn’t Hold Back
Wildlife photographer Deon Wessels was out in Sabi Sands Nature Reserve when he captured a leopard mid-hunt, already deep into the act of subduing a warthog. This wasn’t a distant or fleeting glimpse either, Deon’s footage puts viewers right in the middle of the action, close enough to see every strained muscle and hear every desperate squeal.
The leopard had its jaws firmly clamped around the warthog’s neck, using a classic suffocation technique that big cats rely on to bring down prey. Its front paws gripped tightly onto the pig’s body as the warthog thrashed and twisted, fighting with everything it had to break free.
A Battle of Strength
Warthogs are far from easy prey. Despite their stocky build, they are surprisingly powerful and quick, and a full grown warthog can weigh anywhere between 50 and 150 kilograms depending on age and sex.
For a leopard, tackling prey of this size is no small task, and it takes considerable skill and power to keep hold of an animal fighting this hard for its life. At one point in the footage, the leopard commits its entire body to the struggle, wrapping all four paws around the warthog and using its full weight to pin it down and wear it out.
It’s an exhausting battle for both animals, but time and strength are on the leopard’s side.
The Slow Turning of the Tide
Little by little, the warthog’s struggles begin to weaken. Its squeals grow less frequent, and its movements slow as exhaustion and lack of oxygen take hold.
The leopard maintains its grip throughout, patient and unrelenting, waiting for the fight to fully drain out of its prey. By the end of the video, the warthog is still alive but visibly spent, and the outcome is no longer in question.

This is precisely how leopards are built to hunt. Rather than relying on speed over long distances like a cheetah, they depend on stealth, an explosive ambush, and raw physical strength to finish the job at close quarters.
