A Peaceful Start

Safarigoer Stefan Reynders was watching an impala standing in shallow water at Timbavati when he began filming. It was the perfect setup for a hunt.

For several seconds, the scene looked almost serene. The impala stood undisturbed, seemingly unaware that anything was wrong, while the water around it stood still and quiet.

That calm didn’t last long, however…

The Lion Closes In

A lion appears at the top of the frame, moving along the water’s edge with the kind of slow, deliberate stealth that only a predator on the hunt can manage. Every step is calculated, low and controlled, eyes fixed on the unsuspecting impala below.

As the distance closes, the lion begins to quicken its pace. By the time it’s around four meters away, the impala finally clocks the danger, but by then, it’s already too late.

The lion breaks into a full charge, closing the gap in an instant.

Caught in the Shallows

Water, usually a source of relief in the heat of the bush, becomes the impala’s undoing. Unable to gain any real traction or speed, it has almost no chance to escape.

The lion pins it down in the shallows, and after a brief, desperate struggle, clamps down on the impala’s neck.

Within moments, the lion drags its prey out of the water and onto dry land, the hunt over almost as quickly as it began. It’s a stark, visceral sequence and a reminder of just how efficient and calculated a lion’s ambush can be when the odds are already stacked against its prey.

The Dangers of Water

Bodies of water are some of the preferred hunting grounds for many predators and this video shows exactly why. Not only are prey distracted as they find reprieve from the heat and lower their heads to drink, but they are severely limited in their speed in agility once they enter the water.

Lions are more than capable of exploiting these vulnerabilities and can be quite powerful swimmers if the opportunity necessitates it. Using ambush hunting, rather than engaging in a long chase is perfect for hunting near the water’s edge where sound is muffled and visibility is often obscured.

Unfortunately for this impala, it never stood a chance.
