A Puddle-Sized Problem
Safari guide Dean Robinson was out in Shamwari Private Game Reserve when he came across a pride of lions facing what should have been a non-event. Three adult females and two young cubs stood at the edge of a small, muddy river, one that looked more like a swamp than anything requiring real effort to cross.
The gap itself was barely a metre wide, but judging by the reaction of the pride, it may as well have been a raging torrent. The lions paced and hesitated, eyeing the water as though it hid something far more sinister than a bit of mud. For several minutes, nobody made a move.
One Adult Takes the Plunge
Eventually, one of the females decided enough was enough and committed to the jump. She nearly cleared the gap cleanly but landed with a small splash, sending a ripple of hesitation through the rest of the group.
Rather than follow her lead, one of the other adults opted for a distraction instead, pausing to have a drink at the water’s edge as if the crossing was suddenly the last thing on her mind. That left the real drama to unfold with the cubs.
Cub One Faces the Fear
The first cub, a touch braver than its sibling, approached the water under the watchful eye of its mother. With a gentle nudge to the backside, she convinced it to dip its front paws in.
The cub responded with an immediate hiss of disapproval, clearly unimpressed with the sensation, but having already committed, it scrambled through the rest of the crossing as quickly and clumsily as possible, determined to get it over with.
Cub Two Digs In Its Heels
The second cub, however, wanted absolutely nothing to do with the water. No amount of gentle encouragement was going to work here.

Mom resorted to grabbing the cub’s skin with her teeth, attempting to physically drag it toward the crossing. When that failed, she brought her paws into play too, and soon enough the other drinking adult joined in, both pushing and nudging the reluctant cub toward the water while it hissed the entire way.
Eventually, through sheer persistence from the adults, the cub gave in and made the crossing. Once it was safely on the other side, the rest of the pride followed, though not a single one of them looked particularly thrilled about getting their feet wet.
