The male lion believed he had it in a bag when he planned his attack of a spotted hyena which had entered his territory. However, the spotted hyena caught wind that the lion was closing in on him and managed to escape in time.

While this sighting included all the ingredients of a confrontation, none actually happened. However, the tension of the moment is captured well on film.

Hyena unknowingly enters lion’s territory
Lions are called the King of the Jungle for good reason. These iconic predators are known for their strength and majesty.
This male lion remained relatively hidden from view as a hyena walked unknowingly onto his turf.

There were no warning trumpets for the hyena. Only the spectators saw the lion in the distance, relatively well camouflaged as the hyena took a leisurely stroll across the rugged bushveld terrain.
The male lion’s telltale mane gave him away.

Lions and hyenas are known not to be the best of pals and this is for good reason. Hyenas will often scavenge from lion’s kills, and can be more than just pests. They have even been known to prey on vulnerable lion cubs.
So when this male lion sat to alert on seeing the spotted hyena close by, it was for good reason.

Hyenas are fascinating and often misunderstood animals. Known for their bone-crushing jaws, they can digest bones and bone marrow, making them incredibly efficient consumers.
They are also highly intelligent, capable of complex problem-solving and communication.
While they are often members of clans, this hyena walked alone. This meant that should there have been a confrontation between the hyena and the lion, it would have been a one-on-one affair.
Lions too are usually part of a larger group, called a pride. This male lion was also alone.
Male lion prepares ambush
Having been made aware of the hyena’s presence, the lion sat to attention and began to creep forwards. He had ‘ambush’ in mind, and he had all the size and strength to pull it off.
What he didn’t have in his favour, however, was the hyena’s sudden awareness of impending danger, and resultant flight response.
The scavenger took to the wind, displaying the speed characteristic of an animal in hot pursuit.

Lion chases hot on hyena’s heels
The lion trailed after the hyena. He presented a formidable opponent as he ran, however, the hyena had had a head start and managed to escape just in time.
What should have been the perfect ambush, ended in a cloud of dust. The lion’s blitz attack had failed.
In a one-on-one encounter, a healthy adult lion will typically defeat a single hyena due to its larger size and strength.
However, the dynamics shift when hyenas work in groups. A pack of hyenas, usually four or more, can overpower a lone lion through teamwork and persistence.
In the wild, lions and hyenas frequently clash over food, with lions generally dominating. However, the hyenas’ intelligence and cooperation allow them to steal kills and even bring down weakened lions.
The complex rivalry between lions and hyenas was in full display in this moment. Neither emerged victorious but no doubt, there will more than likely be a confrontation between the two species another day.
