The unforgettable sighting was witnessed by Danielle Sheedy in the Kruger National Park.

Lioness settles with cubs by a waterhole

The lioness had settled with her cubs to drink by a waterhole when Danielle first spotted them.

This fortunate mom was mother to three beautiful cubs and her trio settled by the water’s edge in front of her, enjoying the moment of refreshment with one another.

Cubs are always delightful to watch, and lion cubs are not just inherently playful, they are also curious and completely adorable in the way they depend on their mother.

Rhinos capture mother lioness’ attention

However, something soon caught the mother’s attention.

Two large rhinos were approaching and they appeared to mean business. These rhinos appeared territorial and seemed intent on having the waterhole all to themselves.

Lioness starts to flee as rhinos come closer

Intimidated by their threatening approach, the mother soon stood up to full attention.

She started to flee as the rhinos came even closer, leaving her three cubs looking around, seemingly lost and bewildered.

But of course, they stopped drinking and got up to follow their mother.

Rhinos charge in display of dominance

The rhinos, which were still wet and muddy from a recent wade in the water, charged towards the lioness and other lions from the pride. The little lions ran as fast as they could to get out of the way.

While their mother wasn’t there in that moment, they soon caught up to her… and just in time!

Rhinos are extremely large and can be highly defensive, especially if they feel threatened. A charging rhino can seriously injure or kill a lion. Even adult lions generally avoid direct conflict with rhinos because the risk of injury is too high.

The day ended well for all of the lions. It was also to the relief of spectators that all three of the cubs were accounted for. They could be seen trailing after Mom, all sweet and organised into a straight line behind her.

The mother lioness walked regally off into the distance, with her cubs behind her. They had learned a tough lesson that day. This is that sometimes spur-of-the-moment decisions must be made to protect life.

A possible explanation for mother lioness’ behaviour

Before judging the mother lioness, one has to understand how lions will typically behave in such scenarios. When a mother lioness encounters large animals such as rhinos, her reaction can sometimes seem surprising. In some situations she may move away quickly, even if her cubs are nearby. This behaviour is usually a practical survival decision rather than abandonment.

A lioness must constantly weigh the risks of confrontation, and animals as large and powerful as rhinos present a serious danger.

Lion cubs are also usually taught to hide or remain still when danger appears. Their spotted coats provide good camouflage in grass and bush, and staying low and quiet can make them less noticeable to passing animals. The mother may rely on this instinct while she temporarily moves away from the immediate threat.
