This is exactly what happened when Mark Fox of Foxy’s On Safari witnessed when he filmed this miraculous sighting. The safari adventure was organised by Exploring Kruger.
Lions in road bring traffic to a standstill
This sighting began just like any other ‘lion in the road’ scenario. It is already exciting to see a pride of lions out in the open and walking in the road. However, the ‘spectacular factor’ of the moment was about to be turned up a few notches.
These sub-adult lions also happened to be extremely playful and their interactions were both amusing and impressive.
Playful lioness shows off agility skills
It’s easy to think that sub-adult lions have grown out of their playfulness, however, these lions showed that this wasn’t the case.
One of the lionesses sauntered along with the majestic gait typical of her species and Mark filmed as the magic unfolded.
As she neared her brother, he moved towards her and she then did the unthinkable… she leapt right over him!
It’s hard to imagine the excitement in Mark’s safari vehicle at this exact moment. The lioness’ agility was phenomenal and she performed the leap with little effort.
Pride interactions amaze game viewers
Over her brother she went, with the finesse of a well-trained circus lion… only this was the bushveld, where lions just do what they naturally do.
Although lions are often seen resting for long periods, interactions between pride members can be surprisingly energetic and playful, such as this one.
Despite their fierce reputation, lions spend up to 20 hours a day resting or sleeping. During these periods, they frequently interact through grooming, rubbing heads, playing, and gentle physical contact. Such behaviours help strengthen social bonds and maintain harmony within the group.

Having leapt over her brother, the lioness and the male lion jumped around playfully for a few moments, before proceeding on their way.
Lions can be an exceptionally powerful athletes. They can leap several metres in a single bound and rely on their agility when hunting prey such as zebra, wildebeest, and buffalo. Their strong hind legs provide the explosive force needed for both hunting and avoiding obstacles in their environment.
Jumping over a pride member requires little effort for such a skilled predator!
‘The right place at the right time’
This sighting was a perfect example of how it helps to be in the ‘right place at the right time’. A moment later, and Mark and his fellow game viewers might have missed the memorable action.
Observations like this offer a glimpse into the more playful and social side of lion behaviour. While lions are famous for their hunting prowess and dominance, they are also highly interactive animals that share close family relationships.
