Safraaz Suliman filmed the lioness and her cub walking the distance alongside cars. Scores of game viewers got to witness the memorable sighting.
A rare and privileged sight
This was definitely a rare and privileged sight. The cub’s body was still and its head bent slightly to the side as the mother and cub made their way down the road in full view, to the delight of spectators.
The mother lioness seemed oblivious to the presence of the game viewers. Her attention was focused on carrying her cub safely to their intended destination.
Lionesses are fiercely protective mothers and will often put themselves in danger to defend their young from threats. In prides, related females frequently cooperate by nursing one another’s cubs and guarding them together, creating a supportive nursery. This combination of maternal devotion and cooperative care gives lion cubs the best possible chance of surviving the many challenges of life in the wild.
During the first six to eight weeks of a cub’s life, lionesses often move their young between several hidden dens to protect them from predators, such as hyenas, leopards, and even unfamiliar male lions which may kill cubs.
Mother lionesses will carry their little ones by loose skin at the back of their neck. Carrying a cub in this way is a natural behaviour which triggers a calming reflex, causing the cub to remain still while its mother transports it to safety.
An evidently strong bond
The bond between a lioness and her cubs is also one of the strongest and most important relationships in the bushveld.
From the moment her cubs are born, a lioness devotes herself to their care. Her constant attention helps the cubs grow stronger while reducing the risk of detection by predators.
The mother and her cub were accompanied by the rest of the pride, including a large male lion which followed shortly behind them.
The motorists kept a respectful distance while the entourage made their way down the road. Their majestic gait demanded respect, and it was breathtaking to see such a powerful animal holding onto its little one with such tenderness.
Learnng the ways of the pride
As the cub becomes older, the lioness will teach it the essential skills it will need to survive. Through play, the small animal will develop strength, coordination, and social skills. Supervised hunting trips will also allow it to observe stalking techniques and teamwork.
The mother will also communicate with her cub through gentle calls, body language, and affectionate grooming, reinforcing their close bond.
For now, the cub was given a free ride, and the tiny thing cooperated with its mother, not even giving so much as a flinch.
Witnessing such a moment highlighted the remarkable dedication and protective instincts which make lionesses among Africa’s most devoted mothers. It was hard not to see that this mother and cub shared a special relationship. The little one trusted Mom enough to let her pick it up in her jaws!
