Brothers-in-arms?
Joining the action in this dramatic video, we first see a magnificent pair of male lions strutting across a road. As they advance, we catch a glimpse of a lioness disappearing into the long grass behind them.

Piecing together the action that follows, it appears that the two males, presumably brothers, are intent on taking over a pride of lionesses.
At times like this, tempers run high. Prides do not simply accept males. They must prove themselves as worthy mates, capable of protecting them and their offspring.
Side by side
Instead of following the lioness into the long grass, the brothers start walking side by side along the road. Male lions often form close bonds with one another, allowing them to secure larger territories and more females to mate with.

However, as they walk along, the male on the right looks over at his companion. Something he sees upsets him, and he rushes to confront his supposed ally.

Consequently, their snarling shatters the still morning air. At this point, we assume the aggressor is the dominant of the two, and he’s making sure the other one knows its place.

After a brief face-to-face, order is restored, and the pair continues following the females. Allied males seldom fight one another. Their respective well-being depends on that of the other.

However, to diffuse the tension, the submissive male heads off the road while the other continues along it.

In effect, they’ve given themselves a timeout.

Act two
When the video cuts to a new scene, we’re met with another scuffle underway. Only this time, it is between the males and the females.

There’s a flurry of movement and flying fur as the lionesses band together to repel the males’ advances. When males attempt to assert their dominance over prides of females, the lionesses don’t automatically accept them.

Knowing that both their lives and those of their offspring will depend on the fitness of the new males to protect them, they aren’t easily won over. For the males, the prize is access to territory, food, and mating rights.
Try again later
On this occasion, the lionesses manage to repel the two males, despite their considerable advantages in size and strength.

Accordingly, as much as the males must prove themselves to the females, the females must do the same. By initially repelling them, the females are proving that they, too, are in good health and fit to mother the males’ progeny.

For now, though, their message is clear. The males will have to try again later.

Subsequently, the males retreat. But, in a display of defiant determination, the pair’s roars resonate across the bushveld. They may not be the dominant males now, but they soon will be.
