Game viewers watch strategic attack unfold
Unlike many solitary cats, lions frequently hunt cooperatively. This pride of lions had earmarked a warthog as their desired prey.
They proceeded to move strategically through the bushveld in preparation for the opportune moment to launch an attack.
Crystal was one of a group of game viewers privileged to have a front row seat as the action unfolded.
Lionesses launch attack with explosive fury
When the lions did eventually launch their attack it was with explosive fury. In this specific hunt, the lionesses of the pride orchestrated the hunt.
Lionesses are especially skilled at coordinating attacks, although male lions also hunt when opportunities arise. Some members of the pride may approach from downwind while others position themselves to cut off likely escape routes.
This teamwork greatly increases the odds of capturing prey.

The warthog in question was out in the open and away from the protection of its burrow.
One of a warthog’s greatest survival tools is these burrows which are dug underground.
Warthogs commonly use abandoned aardvark burrows as refuges from predators. These underground shelters provide protection not only from lions but also from leopards, hyenas and harsh weather.
When warthogs enter these burrows they don’t rush in headfirst. Instead, they usually back into them. This unusual behaviour allows the warthog to face outward with its sharp tusks pointing toward the entrance. If a predator attempts to follow, it encounters a determined animal armed with formidable weapons.
Warthog vulnerable as lions approach
However, this warthog had been away from its ‘underground shelter’ and by the time the lionesses started to charge towards it, it was too late to run for shelter.
What followed was a memorable chase, just metres from the open-back game vehicles.
The breathtaking display of strength by the lionesses left game viewers in awe.
The lionesses didn’t seem to even notice the vehicles as they closed in on the warthog.
Their focus was set exclusively on the warthog.

They ran past the vehicle, with the gap between themselves and the helpless warthog rapidly closing.
Lions pull warthog to the ground
Eventually, they caught the animal, leaving a cloud of dust around them as they pulled the warthog to the ground to conclude the kill.
It was a breathtaking moment, and one which left witnesses with renewed respect for the inherent power of lions.
