The relationship between various predator species is mainly driven by competition. In this challenging footage, an attack by lions on a pack of African wild dogs leaves devastation in its wake.
Daniel Katz shared this tragic event with Latest Sightings. He filmed the action while visiting Chitwa Chitwa in South Africa’s Sabi Sands Nature Reserve.

A stealthy approach
As we join Daniel at the sighting, we can see a lone lioness stalking. Her focus is absolute, but her target is not what we would hope for.
Lions are stalk-and-ambush hunters, meaning that they use stealth to get within striking distance of their prey. Like all cats, they have evolved this into a fine art.
Blissfully unaware
Subsequently, Daniel pans to reveal the subject of the lioness’s attention. A pair of African wild dogs are resting, with their pack spread out nearby, blissfully unaware of the approaching danger.
Also known as painted wolves, the dogs are one of Africa’s most endangered predators, with only 6,500 still living in isolated pockets across the continent. Their decline is the consequence of habitat loss and other human-related causes.
Blitz attack
As Daniel pans back to the lioness, she launches her attack. Abundant fast-twitch muscle fibres enable her muscles to propel her to top speed in just a few strides.
With the combined advantages of surprise and speed, she rapidly closes in on the unsuspecting pack. However, unlike most strikes, her goal is not food but dominance.
Scatter in hope
As the cat closes to within a few metres, the dogs see her coming and scatter in all directions. Although they, too are social predators, they have little chance against even one full-grown lion.
Their best hope is to spread out. Hopefully, in the confusion, the lioness will miss them all.
Ruthless efficiency
However, to our horror, the lioness targets a pair of young pups, who are no match for her speed and power.
Seconds later, we witness a tragic inevitability as the lioness pounces on one of the yelping pups. While this secures one’s life, it means the loss of the other.
Her victim secured, she crashes on top of the pup, delivering a savage bite to its spine.
Even as she does, one of the adult dogs arrives in a vain effort to save it.

With her first victim downed, the lioness looks up just as another adult dog runs by. In a flash, she gives chase as the crippled pup writhes in her wake.
Within seconds, she brings down a second dog, this time an adult female. Again, she delivers a devastating bite to the spine.
Meanwhile, more lions run into view. Far from being the work of a lone assassin, this is a coordinated attack by an entire pride.
A painful part of Nature
With two dogs dying as the dust settles, the lions inspect their shattered bodies. For now, they have driven the remaining dogs away and reduced their competition.
As brutal as the spectacle is, it is a natural occurrence, part of the functioning of a healthy ecosystem. Tomorrow, it could be the lions who must suffer for equilibrium to be maintained.
