Monitor lizard refuses to give up
While monitor lizards are imposing creatures when fully grown, their hatchlings and young can be vulnerable to the attack of predators.
This baby monitor lizard was marked as prey by a tenacious snake, however, it wasn’t about to take its fate lying down. It bit back at the snake, which had its venomous teeth sunk into its neck and its body wound around its torso!
Monitor Lizards have various defense mechanisms to protect themselves from predators or danger. They will use their sharp claws and strong jaws to fend off attackers, while some species can escape by running quickly or swimming away. Additionally, certain Monitor Lizards can inflate their bodies and produce hissing sounds or other intimidating noises to deter potential threats.
As this sighting suggests, these instinctive defense mechanisms kick in even when the lizards are young.
This baby monitor lizard bit at the predator and used its tail and hind legs as a weapon to defend itself.
At one point, it wrapped its hind quarters and tail around the snake, trying to give itself leverage to push the snake away. It demonstrated extreme agility, even though the snake held it firmly with its teeth and limber body.
The lizard wriggled and tried to use every free appendage to retaliate against the snake’s vicious onslaught.
Lizard refuses to give in to snake bully
In a second sighting, an equally determined baby monitor lizard put a commendable fight, even though its face was covered by the snake’s mouth and it couldn’t see a thing.
The lizard’s powerful hind legs propelled it in all directions, causing the snake to twist and turn, in a violent wrestling match.
At one point, the lizard pulled the snake to its back, even though its head remained in the snake’s mouth.

The powerful movements again showed the stealth and agility monitor lizards are known for. Even while this was a young monitor lizard, it already knew much about defending itself. Had the snake intended to find an easy meal, it had definitely come to the wrong lizard!
Just when viewers thought the lizard was down and out, it sprang back to its feet, ready for more action.
The poor snake clung on, sinking its teeth into the lizard and refusing to give up its stance of attack. It was lizard vs snake and there wasn’t about to be any surrender until there was a clear winner.
Lizard succumbs to snake’s attack
In spite of the impressive showdown, the lizard eventually succumbed to the snake’s venom. However, not without first earning the respect of the viewers privileged to watch one of the nature’s greatest wrestling matches.
The snake then swallowed the lizard. If it was exhausted from being thrown around in the sand by its prey, it didn’t show it. This wasn’t an easy meal and perhaps the snake made a ‘note to self’ to next time pick a different species as its prey.
