Male Lion Drags Entire Buffalo Across The Road

A pride settles into the shade after a long night of hunting, but the story isn’t over yet. One male decides the meal deserves a better location, and drags the proof of the pride’s power straight across the road.

A Kill Left in the Road

The drama began the night before, when a pride of lions brought down a buffalo along the S100 near the Nwanetsi River, roughly five kilometres from Satara Rest Camp. The kill happened right in the road itself, leaving the carcass exposed and the sighting wide open for anyone lucky enough to be in the area the next morning.

Contributor Anchia Harmse was one of those lucky few. As she explained, the timing was almost impossibly tight:

“We arrived just as the male picked up and dragged the heavy buffalo carcass into the shade. Had we been there 10 minutes later, we would have missed it.”

Perfect Timing, Perfect Position

By the time Anchia’s vehicle pulled up, the rest of the pride was already sprawled out nearby, resting in whatever shade they could find. Lionesses lounged with a few juvenile cubs scattered among them, several visibly panting in the heat of the day.

It was a scene of full bellies and quiet recovery after a successful hunt. The male, meanwhile, stood beside the enormous carcass, seemingly catching his breath before the next round of effort.

Positioning made all the difference for those watching. As Anchia noted, most vehicles were parked behind the lion and missed the moment entirely, while her car happened to be on the correct side of the road to watch the action unfold head on.

A Show of Raw Power

Then, without warning, the male got back to work. He clamped down on the buffalo and began hauling the full carcass across the ground, dragging it directly toward the resting pride and, from Anchia’s angle, straight toward her vehicle.

Buffalo are not small animals. A mature bull can weigh well over 700 kilograms, several times the weight of the lion doing the dragging!

Watching one muscle its way across open ground with that kind of dead weight is a rare and humbling reminder of just how much power these cats carry. “It was a memorable sighting for me,” Anchia said, “as I did not know lions were this strong.”

The Strength Behind the Muscle

Male lions are built for exactly this kind of task. Their thick necks and powerful shoulders allow them to control prey far heavier than themselves, whether they are wrestling it to the ground during a hunt or repositioning it afterward for safety.

Dragging a kill into shade or cover also helps protect it from scavengers like hyenas, and keeps the meat cooler for longer in the heat of the day.

A Reminder of Nature’s Power

Sightings like this rarely come together so perfectly, a fresh kill, the right light, and a vehicle in exactly the right spot at exactly the right moment. It’s a reminder that some of the most unforgettable wildlife encounters are as much about timing as they are about the animals themselves.
