Only, what made this sighting all the more breathtaking was the fact that it was witnessed from an open-back safari vehicle… and the lions even crashed against the vehicle as their brawl unfolded.

Rival lions come face to face
Two lone male lions coming face to face makes for some raw, dynamic game viewing.
The tension between these two was obvious long before the fight began. Each one carried the confidence and authority of a dominant predator.
Lions approach one another with fury
As the lions approached one another, neither showed any sign of backing down. What followed was a dramatic confrontation.
One of the male lions had scars from a previous battle. He was so close up to the game viewing vehicle, that his scars were immediately obvious.
Once the lions had sized each other up, they started to charge towards one another, kicking up dust and launching into each other with venom and fury. Male lions spend much of their lives competing for territory, food, and mating opportunities. Unlike females, which often remain with their birth pride for life, males must constantly prove themselves.
Intense confrontation rolls out
Initially, they were far enough from the vehicle for its occupants to feel ‘safe’. However, the confrontation moved in a cloud of dust towards the vehicle. The sheer size of the lions was evident, and vehicle occupants could hear the thuds and growls, and skirmish with frightening clarity.
These were big boys and they weren’t playing games. It would be fighting to the death if needs be.
No doubt the game viewers tucked their arms inside the vehicle and felt just a little fear as these two competed for the title of ‘King’.
Resonant roars break bushveld silence
The lions’ deep growls presented as terrifying sounds. Roaring and growling serve an important purpose in lion society. These vocal displays can help establish dominance and sometimes prevent a fight altogether.
However, on this occasion, neither lion was willing to retreat.
The most thrilling moment of the confrontation was the moment when the males collided with tremendous force, crashing into the vehicle.
As they continued to fight, their massive bodies slammed together. They rose up on their hind legs, swiping with powerful forelegs. Each lion attempted to gain leverage while avoiding the dangerous teeth and claws of the other.
An adult male lion can weigh more than 200 kilograms, and when two such animals collide, the impact is enormous. This was not a sighting for the faint-hearted!
Bloodthirsty battle ends without a fatality
Eventually, having crashed into the vehicle as they fought, the lions ran off into the thicket; with one lion pursuing the other. It was unclear which one of the two emerged the victor.
It’s a good thing the lions had their attention on one another and not on the vehicle or its occupants. What is certain is that these game viewers learned that you don’t mess with a lion. These big boys deserve only respect!
