The dramatic brawl happened right next to the side of the road, in the Kruger National Park.

Quiet game drive interrupted by fiendish brawl
Yolanda’s quiet game drive changed in an instant when these two male lions decided to have a go at one another.
They didn’t mind so much that they had an audience as they lunged towards one another. It was all muscles and fury, and neither party seemed interested in backing down.
The raw intensity of lion behaviour was within metres of Yolanda’s vehicle. This gave her a front row seat for filming all of the action.

Male lions, primed for battle
Male lions are among the most imposing animals in Africa, and when two adults confront one another, the encounter can look dramatic even before physical contact begins.
A stare, a low growl or a deliberate step towards a rival can be enough to change the atmosphere.
Lions rely heavily on displays and vocalisations to establish who has the right to remain in an area, and physical fighting is often the final stage of a conflict that has been building for some time.

A lioness stood nearby witnessing the entire confrontation. These were big boys and they weren’t afraid to give of their all in their attempts to establish dominance.
Although lions spend much of their lives resting, males have an important role in defending a pride and the territory associated with it. A coalition of males may control access to a group of females and defend the pride against rival males.
This makes competition between males particularly intense because control of a pride can determine which males reproduce and which are forced to move on.

Interestingly, a male lion’s mane also plays a role in these confrontations. Its size, colour and condition can provide visual information to other lions about the animal wearing it.
A large, healthy-looking mane can contribute to an imposing appearance, although mane development is influenced by age, hormones, genetics and environmental conditions.
During a confrontation, the mane makes an adult male appear even larger as he faces a rival.

Lioness watches as male lions battle it out
These lions didn’t hold back as they fought, and in certain moments, even appeared airborne.
The lioness could be seen continuing to watch from the sidelines.
The male lions were like two wrestlers in the heavyweight championships and they weren’t about to relent until one of them came out tops.

Lion retreats from fighting site
Eventually, it seems, there was a winner. With one of the males, bloodied and visible stirred up, retreating from the site. He ran close to the vehicle; a picture of majesty and power.
The fight beside the road demonstrated just how quickly a confrontation can become physical. Male lions are heavily muscled animals, with large forelimbs and powerful jaws.
Their paws are also equipped with retractable claws, which can be used when hunting and during conflicts. Even a brief clash between adult males can therefore carry significant risks.
Fortunately for these big guys there were no casualties in the confrontation.
