For Wihantjie Nel, a wildlife enthusiast and photographer with a sharp eye for the remarkable, her time in the area delivered a sighting she wasn’t prepared for.
Among a herd of elephants moving through the bush, one small calf stood apart, not in behaviour, but in form. Its trunk, the most essential tool an elephant possesses, was roughly less than half the length it should have been.
The deformity was impossible to miss, and yet the calf carried itself without any trace of distress.

Adapting to Survive
What Wihantjie’s footage captures is nothing short of inspiring. Unable to reach the ground with its shortened trunk in the way a healthy elephant would, the calf had worked out its own solution.
It lowered itself to its knees, closing the distance between its mouth and the earth. Then, it used its abbreviated trunk to help guide scoops of plant material inward.
The movement was deliberate and unhurried, the kind of behaviour that speaks to weeks or months of quiet problem-solving.

The calf is clearly healthy and well-developed, which means it has been feeding successfully for some time. Within an elephant herd, that rarely happens by accident.
