Even when a hunt starts off well, things can turn sour at a moment’s notice, especially when it comes to predators competing for territory, and the prey that lives in it.

Lezy Pretorius caught this very type of confrontation at the Nkorho Bush Lodge when two male lions caught wind of lionesses from another pride hunting in places they shouldn’t be.

A Good Day For An Ambush

Because they lack the stamina for a prolonged chase, predators like these lions prefer to bring down their prey in sudden ambush attacks that play into their, literal, strengths.

They might not be able to run as fast or as long as a zebra, but if they can get their claws or teeth close enough they absolutely possess the strength to bring it down.

This means that these lionesses needed to get as close as they could to their prospective prey, ready to leap and bring it down before it really has time to react to their presence. It was time to launch an attack.

Beginning With Their Best

At first, things seemed to go particularly well for the lionesses. The zebra sensed them at the last moment and tried to bolt, but the big cats were already close enough to pounce.

The unlucky zebra hadn’t made it very far before it found itself with two heavy lionesses dangling from it, and it just didn’t have the strength to buck them off and escape.

Typically, at this point of the hunt the end conclusion is clear. With two lionesses doing their best to drag the zebra down to the ground where they could dispatch of it more easily, it seemed like the final seconds of the zebra’s life were ticking away.

Taking Too Long

But, while this may have appeared to be a textbook takedown at the beginning of Lezy’s footage, the lionesses had made a damning mistake that would lose them their meal. There were taking too long.

The sounds of a scuffle can carry over long distances, and animals in distress can make a lot of noise. Predators have to bring their prey down quickly because they never know what else might be out there, hungrily listening for its own prey.

In this case, the hunting lionesses had drawn the attention of two male lions, and even worse, these were lions from a different pride, that would not look kindly upon the intruders hunting near their territory.

A Good Day For A Territorial Dispute

Rival predators tend to take a dim view on others regardless of territorial intrusions. These two male lions weren’t even that fussed about the zebra itself, which quickly managed to escape while the lionesses were distracted, but they were very angry with the lionesses.

Hunting might create a lot of noise, but anyone who’s heard two house cats squaring up to one another knows that even small felines are also capable of being incredibly loud.

A lot of snarling and growling, and a few moments of physical intimidation from the two male lions, and the lionesses were convinced that their hunt wasn’t worth it and evacuated the area.
