Secretary Bird Shows Off Soccer Skills in the Field

It’s not every day you see a bird with a better kick than most humans. One safari-goer captured a rare and hilarious moment in the Kgalagadi when a secretary bird decided to turn predator skills into playtime.

A Strange Object Catches the Bird’s Eye

While on safari in the wilds of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Frikkie Van Jaarsveld came across a scene that combined wildlife observation with pure entertainment. Out in the open grasslands stood one of Africa’s most striking and unique raptors: a secretary bird!

Instead of stalking a snake or scanning the horizon for prey however, this particular bird had found something quite unusual.

Beside it lay a mysterious round object, perhaps a discarded ball, or maybe even a fruit carried there by fate. Whatever it was, it had surely caught the bird’s attention.

At first, the secretary bird stood curiously beside the ball. Its head turned this way and that, as if trying to puzzle out the strange object.

Then, without the least hesitation, the bird lifted its leg and began to kick at the ball!

When the Hunt Becomes a Game

What followed was nothing short of comical. The bird continued kicking the object back and forth, tapping and swiping at it in a playful yet purposeful manner.

For any spectator, it looked like the bird was practicing its football skills, but behind the lighthearted spectacle lay an incredible display of instinct.

Secretary birds are known for their stomping behaviour, which they use to hunt their prey including snakes and small mammals. Their long and muscular legs deliver kicks with lightning speed and stunning force.

These are among the few raptors in the world that actually hunt on foot, rather than from the air. So while this bird’s kicks may have looked playful, what was occurring in reality was a demonstration of finely tuned predatory reflexes.

A Predator with Personality

Similar to many intelligent species, secretary birds are sometimes observed engaging in what can only be described as playful behaviour. Play serves an important function in the animal kingdom: developing motor skills, strengthening coordination, and honing hunting skills.

It could be that the bird was just testing whether the object was edible or mistook it for prey at first. However, once it found out that this “target” didn’t fight back, it kept kicking as a form of stimulation due to the motion itself.

This degree of curiosity and persistence, however, is a part of what makes secretary birds so compelling. They embody both ferocity and elegance, moving with the grace of a crane and the deadliness of a raptor.

Mastery of the Grasslands

Found throughout sub-Saharan Africa, secretary birds favour open savannas and semi-arid areas, such as Kgalagadi, where tall grass offers both cover and visibility. They spend much of their day walking, as they search for prey amongst the grass.

Ground hunting, as opposed to air hunting, requires an entirely different set of skills, to which these birds are perfectly suited. They use their powerful long legs for precision stomps that can incapacitate venomous snakes in a matter of seconds.

A Lighthearted Moment in the Wild

In a landscape known for dramatic predator-prey confrontations, this was a rare glimpse into the personality of one of Africa’s most charismatic hunters. Whether the bird mistook the object for prey or simply enjoyed the motion of kicking it, the result was the same: a display of skill, curiosity, and spirit.

For Frikkie and others who are fortunate enough to watch the scene, it served as a reminder that the wild can produce magical moments that you never expect.
