A Peaceful Drive Takes a Sudden Turn
The dramatic encounter was filmed by David Manachi on a sunny day along the S26 in Kruger National Park. The video begins calmly, with David’s vehicle moving slowly down the road in an attempt to follow a pack of wild dogs.
The dogs trotted along ahead, alert but relaxed, occasionally glancing back as the vehicle kept a respectful distance. Everything felt like a normal safari encounter… until it didn’t.
Without warning, an elephant charged into view from around a bend in the road, barreling forward at full speed. The sudden appearance was startling, and the mood shifted instantly from excitement to tension.
Chaos on the Road
The wild dogs reacted first. In a split second, they scattered in all directions, abandoning the road entirely as instinct took over.
Their response was immediate and decisive as wild dogs rely on speed and coordination to survive. Avoiding large, unpredictable animals like elephants is second nature to them.
Inside the vehicle, voices rose as adrenaline spiked. Someone urgently advised the driver to reverse, and the car began backing away along the narrow road.
The elephant continued its charge for several moments, closing the distance fast enough to make everyone’s hearts race. Then, just as quickly as it began, the elephant veered off the road and into the bush.
When Elephants Charge and Why
Although the charge looked aggressive, encounters like this are often mock charges rather than true attacks. Elephants are highly intelligent and extremely aware of their surroundings.
A sudden vehicle, movement, or unexpected encounter, especially near a bend in the road, can trigger a defensive response. Elephants may charge to assert their dominance, create space, or remove what they perceive as a threat.
In many cases, they stop short or divert away once they feel the message has been delivered. However, even mock charges are incredibly dangerous.

A Perfect Response
After the elephant disappeared into the bush, the vehicle came to a complete stop. The tension inside was palpable, but no one rushed to move forward.
Instead, someone calmly narrated that the elephant appeared to be moving away. Crucially, the group did not attempt to push past the area immediately.
The itinerary would eventually take them down the same road from which the elephant had emerged, but patience prevailed. They waited until it was safe to proceed, giving both the elephant and the wild dogs the space they needed.
This response reflects textbook safari protocol: stay calm, reverse slowly, avoid sudden movements, and never attempt to challenge or crowd large animals.
