Vehicle stops to watch mother and baby rhino

Darren explained how they had seen the mom and her baby rhino while on a game drive. “The mom and baby were slowly walking down the gravel road, when all of a sudden the baby rhino got super excited and started running up and down – coming quite close to the safari vehicle and then running back to its mom.”

Every parent will know what it’s like to have an impatient little one who wants to go ahead and inspect what is going on, but then runs back to mom or dad who isn’t quite walking fast enough!

This little rhino kept running back to its mother as though to say, “Come on Mom, walk a little faster!”
She, however, wasn’t in a rush and walked forward with stately steps and a composed, majestic demeanor.

It is rare to sight a mother rhino with its baby. However, the little rhino’s joyous trot added something extra special to the unique sighting.

The baby’s unbridled enthusiasm was in stark contrast to the mother’s controlled gait.

Baby rhino inspects mud muddle

At one point, the small rhino inspected a mud puddle, unafraid of the safari vehicle. Its mother didn’t seem too concerned or threatened.

It should come as no surprise that baby rhinos are generally incredibly playful, whether in their natural habitat or under human care. Engaging in play is essential for them, as it helps them form strong social bonds while also improving their coordination, agility, and muscle strength. Additionally, playful activities contribute to maintaining healthy skin.

One of their favorite pastimes is rolling in the mud. This muddy coating not only keeps their skin hydrated but also acts as a natural barrier, protecting them from insect bites and the harsh sun.

Besides mud play, young rhinos enjoy stomping their feet, running around, and mock charging.

Being so close to a baby rhino, it becomes evident that while mini versions of adult rhinos, they are by no means lightweight.

At birth, baby rhinos already weigh as much as an adult human! Most newborn rhinos weigh in at around 40 to 64 kg!

Mother rhinos typically give birth to a single infant after a pregnancy. They might give birth to twins, however, this is extremely rare.

A sighting to remember

Darren said that after all the excitement, the mom and baby eventually walked through some mud puddles and off into the distance.

Rhinos love mud and both appeared to be in their element.

He said he believed in savouring each sighting, whether in person, or through a video clip. This sighting was a precious reminder of the dynamic, exuberant life which exists in the bushveld; as well as the unique dispositions which exist within each animal.
