A group of three lion cubs was left alone by their mother to fend for themselves. This practice is great for teaching the cubs how to be independent and survive on their own. Mommy was most likely not far away, either watching from a distance or out on a hunt.
Lion cubs are truly adorable and act just like domestic cats. They lounge around during the day and pounce on any “prey” they may find, even if it’s just a stick or a bug. Their playful nature is what attracts humans to watch their every interaction.
In Kenya, gazelles are quite common in the wild. Nevertheless, it’s always exciting to see a mother bonding with her baby. Mommy gazelles clean their young to ensure they have no bugs on them. The act also strengthens their bond.
It’s an adorable sight to witness any mother animal cuddling with her offspring. In these images, we see a newborn calf being groomed and cared for by its attentive mother.
Another example of big cat independence: a ranger spotted these two leopard cubs having the time of their lives adventuring. Mom was probably close by, allowing her babies some freedom to explore and play on their own.
Just as domestic cats do, leopards can meow. Here’s an example of a tiny cub mewing, perhaps searching for its sibling or even its mother.
Seeing buffaloes and rhinos close to each other is a relatively common occurrence in the wild. They are both large and strong animals and have a mutual respect for each other. Their young may even play together, as we see here.
The two calves enjoy an exciting playdate, chasing each other around and pretending to charge. Play is important for young animals of all kinds as it helps them learn survival skills in a fun and engaging way.
These three hyena pups were caught playfighting. It’s common for females to bully the males, as hyenas are matriarchal. Female pups tend to tease and mess around with their brothers from time to time.
Mommy hyena comes to the rescue and breaks up the playful fight before it becomes dangerous. Mothers generally leave their young to play, but sometimes they step in to save the day for the smaller pups.
A tiny baby elephant pretends to charge at the camera. Some young calves practice being adult-like as a way to play.
The elephant calf falls over in a hilarious twist of events. The parents cautiously watch over it to ensure it’s not hurt.
