As an elephant approached a water trough, he assumed his size would give him immediate access. However, one tenacious warthog was not easily convinced.
Brent Schnupp submitted this amusing footage to Latest Sightings. He filmed it while visiting South Africa’s Kruger National Park.
Gathering at the water
As we join Brent at the sighting, we see a variety of animals gathered at an artificial water point. The surrounding landscape is drab, suggesting that the dry season is well underway.
An elephant bull approaches as we watch, confident in his size and bulk. Like all the other animals, he is eager to quench his thirst.
When size matters
With its head held aloft and ears flared, the bull makes an imposing sight. Accordingly, even the buffalo scatter as they realise the bull wants to drink.
While elephants are generally docile creatures, they’re not averse to using their size to their advantage. Individuals have been known to drive off entire lion prides, so we assume he’ll meet no resistance.

Not easily shaken
However, one little creature has either not seen the bull’s approach or decided to ignore it. After all, with water scarce, survival is everything.
Consequently, when the elephant sees the little pig in the trough, it surprises him somewhat. Strangely, even as he gets closer, the warthog remains unshaken.
Escalating matters
Accordingly, the bull decides it is time to escalate matters. Flaring his ears, he advances on the trough, certain the warthog will move.
However, when it still decides to stay put, the bull escalates its threat with a loud trumpet.
Although this startles the hog, it seems to slip in the trough, leading Brent’s guide to wonder whether it has hurt itself. Subsequently, the warthog stays in the trough, much to the elephant’s dismay.

Now, with a crowd of onlookers watching, the elephant seems to feel his authority is at stake. However, his threats still fail to change the pig’s mind.
Consequently, the bull circles the trough, ready to try a different approach.
This time, the warthog does exit the trough. Finally, the bull can enjoy his much-delayed drink.
Or so you’d think…
Two can play at that game
Subsequently, the pig circled behind the elephant while it drank.
Then, hoping not to be noticed, it cheekily re-entered the trough while the elephant wasn’t looking.
Then, showing no fear, the pig casually walked right under the elephant’s (elongated) nose.
Shocked, the bull again sent the cheeky hog packing with a trumpet and wave of his trunk.
As Brent’s video comes to an end, the two adversaries face each other.
As the chastened pig stands with its head lowered, it looks like the elephant is lecturing it on waterhole ethics. It is probably safe to say that this, too, will be ignored.
