Watch The Sighting:
Safari-goer Fiona captured this heartbreaking sighting while on a game drive in Kruger National Park. As they made their way down the S41, Fiona’s group spotted an injured mother buffalo limping along the side of the road with her calf, and knew the weakness wouldn’t go unnoticed for long.
Lions In Wait
In the open savannah, patience is a predator’s greatest weapon, and this remained particularly true for two male lions who were lying in wait in the tall grass. Two perfect targets, the injured mother and her calf, wandered unsuspectingly into their path.

As soon as Fiona spotted the lions, she knew that the males wouldn’t be able to resist the opportunity for an easy hunt, so she began to film. Instead of charging recklessly, however, the lions lay low in the tall grass, studying every step of the mother and her calf.
The scene quickly became tense as one of the lions dropped into a stalking crouch, narrowing the gap silently and precisely.

A Powerful Battle
The mother and her calf made their way down the dirt road in full view of Fiona’s safari vehicle, closely pursued by the lion who was beginning to pick up his pace. When he was only a few meters away, he crossed the road and made his move.

Muscles taut and eyes locked, he launched forward, charging towards the stronger of the two targets. However, just as he was within pouncing distance, the mother buffalo realized the imminent danger and spun around!
In a flash of bravery, she gored the lion with her horns, lifting him off his feet and flipping him onto his back. Dust flew as predator met prey in a fierce face-off!

No Way Out
Despite the blow, the lion wasn’t deterred. While somersaulting through the air, he managed to sink his teeth into the mother’s thick neck.
She struggled to shake him off, but his grip only tightened. Her calf stood nearby, watching in panic and unable to intervene.

Eventually, the lion began to drag her down slowly, suffocating her inch by inch in a brutal yet efficient kill. The strength of the mother’s resistance spoke volumes, but the odds were stacked against her.
A Major Feast
Once the mother lay motionless, the first lion summoned his companion. Working together, they turned their attention to the calf.
With no one left to protect it, the calf didn’t stand a chance. Several minutes later, both lions were feasting, having felled two buffalo in a single hunt.

It was a major victory for the pair and a sobering reminder of how quickly fortune shifts in the savannah. Although difficult to watch, this sighting was a stark reminder that nature never romanticizes survival.
Every encounter between predator and prey is driven by need, instinct, and timing. These lions’ success was not just a result of their brute strength, it was based on strategy, opportunity, and the ability to exploit a moment of vulnerability.

For the mother buffalo, her injury was a death sentence to both her and her calf, yet her final act was one of astounding courage. She was able to meet death fighting, horns first.
