Caught in the Open
Ranger Liam Todd of Jock Safari Lodge was out on a drive when he came across a scene most guests only ever hear about in stories. A waterbuck had been cornered by a pack of wild dogs, and the pack wasted no time surrounding their target.

With nowhere to run and the dogs closing in from every angle, the buck was forced to make a stand right where it was. Wild dogs are known for their coordinated hunting style, working together to wear down prey through persistence rather than brute strength.

This encounter was a textbook example, with the pack fanning out around the waterbuck and taking turns testing its defences.
A Battle of Angles
What made this sighting so remarkable was just how well the waterbuck held its own. Every time a dog attempted to slip around from behind and go for its hindquarters, the buck spun to face the threat head on, using its antlers to ward the attacker off.

The dogs would retreat, regroup, and try again from a different angle, only to be met with the same sharp turn and the same lowered horns.

It became a relentless back and forth, with the pack probing for any opening while the buck refused to give them one. The exchange was almost exhausting just to watch, as neither side let up for a second.

The dogs’ persistence is what makes them such effective hunters, but this waterbuck proved that persistence alone doesn’t always guarantee a result.

Standing Firm Under Pressure
Despite being significantly outnumbered, the buck never faltered. Each time the dogs shifted their approach, it adjusted just as quickly, using controlled, sharp pivots to keep its horns between itself and the threat.

Wild dog hunts often succeed through sheer perseverance, gradually exhausting their prey until it can no longer defend itself. Yet as the footage rolled on, there was no sign of that happening here.
Unfortunately, the encounter ended without a clear resolution. The footage cuts off with the standoff still very much underway, leaving everyone who has since watched the clip wondering how it all played out.

Did the buck manage to hold out until the dogs gave up, or did their numbers eventually prove too much? For now, the outcome remains a mystery.
Nature’s Uncertain Endings

Not every sighting in the bush comes with a tidy conclusion, and that’s part of what makes wildlife viewing so captivating. This encounter is a powerful reminder of just how much fight prey animals are capable of putting up when their survival is on the line, and how encounters between predator and prey don’t always go the way you’d expect.
