About the Kori Bustard

The kori bustard is known as one of the world’s heaviest flying birds. They can reach a height of 1.5 meters (5 feet) and weigh up to 19 kilograms (41 pounds). They are very versatile feeders, hunting insects, reptiles, and small mammals – but also feed on seeds, and tree gum and may even scavenge on carcasses. These incredible birds possess massive territories throughout the year but are common to see wandering especially after veld fires. As this brings an abundance of food sources, such as carrion and exposed animals.

About the Secretary Bird

Secretary birds are extraordinary birds of prey, hunting anything from rodents and snakes to small mammals. Many know these birds for vigorously stamping on their victims – especially reptiles who try to escape, such as snakes. Secretary birds are very territorial but will move away if potential threats are too great a risk, however, they have been known to stand their ground.

Secretary bird and kori bustard sightings in Kruger South – Satara to Olifants

In the South of the park, the kori bustard and secretary birds are predominately spotted along the S28, S25, and S137 as well as around Crocodile Bridge Gate and around Lower Sabie. Interestingly from Malelane to Skukuza along the H3, we only received secretary bird sightings. We haven’t received kori bustard sightings in the western part of the park and this may be because they don’t occur in dense woody areas.

Our statistics indicate that these two majestic birds are seen more predominantly in the South of Kruger from Satara to Crocodile Bridge, as opposed to the North. Over the years, we have noticed that our community tends to venture and ting more in the South, as opposed to the North of Kruger which is why there may be more sightings of these birds.
