A Hidden Threat Above the River
At Lion Rock, part of the Mjejane Winchester Lodges concession, a male lion had positioned himself on the rocks overlooking a river where a herd of buffalo had gathered to drink. Captured by Ting Vision, Latest Sightings’ smart wildlife camera and live-streaming network, the footage shows the lion tucked out of sight, patiently watching the herd below as they went about their business, unaware of the danger lurking just above them.
Slowly, the lion began to creep down towards the water, using the terrain to mask his approach. But buffalo are notoriously alert, and it didn’t take long before the herd caught wind of the threat.
In an instant, the calm at the river shattered as the buffalo scrambled up the hillside, desperate to put distance between themselves and the advancing predator.
A Close Call on the Rocks
Amid the chaos, one buffalo struggled to keep pace with the rest of the herd. Slower off the mark and momentarily stuck navigating the rocky terrain, it became an easy target.
The lion seized the opportunity, closing the gap and grabbing hold of the buffalo’s hindquarters in an attempt to bring it down. For a few heart-stopping seconds, it looked as though the hunt might end in the lion’s favour, but the buffalo had other plans.
With a powerful shake, it managed to throw the lion off and scramble to safety, rejoining the rest of the herd higher up the slope.
The Tables Turn
Even after the failed grab, the lion didn’t give up immediately. He continued to advance towards the herd, though his body language had shifted.
Gone was the confident stalking of before, replaced by a noticeable hesitation now that the element of surprise was lost. Sensing this shift, the buffalo herd did something remarkable.

Rather than continuing to flee, they turned to face their attacker. What followed was a back-and-forth standoff, with the buffalo pushing forward towards the lion, only for him to retreat, before the roles reversed again moments later.
This tense push and pull continued for a while, each side testing the other’s resolve. Buffalo are known for their strength in numbers, and this sighting was a clear reminder of just how effective that strategy can be against even one of Africa’s top predators.
A Predator Forced to Retreat
Eventually, the pressure from the herd became too much. Worn down and outmatched by the sheer collective will of the buffalo, the lion abandoned his pursuit entirely and made his way back down towards the river, leaving the herd victorious on the hillside above.
This sighting is a powerful example of how buffalo, often seen as passive grazers, can turn the tables on a determined predator when they stand together. It’s a reminder that in the wild, courage and unity can be just as valuable as claws and teeth.
