A Quiet Crossing Turns Dangerous
This incredible footage comes from Ting Vision, Latest Sightings’ 24/7 wildlife camera that captures unfiltered moments from the heart of the bush. This particular sighting was recorded at Winchester Marketing’s Lion Rock River Lodge, where a buffalo herd was making its way across the river on what seemed to be an ordinary crossing.
Watch the video now:

The herd moved steadily through the water, heads low and bodies sloshing along in a loose line. Then, from the left edge of the frame, a crocodile glided into view, cutting through the water on a direct path towards the herd.

The Predator Among the Herd
What makes this sighting so remarkable is how long the crocodile was able to travel right alongside the herd without being noticed. For a few tense moments, it swam beside the buffalo while not a single animal seemed to clock the danger.

Crocodiles are masters of this approach, using stillness and patience to close the distance before anyone realizes they are there.
Then it struck! The crocodile lunged and sank its teeth into the rear of one of the buffalo.

The victim bucked hard and bellowed, and its alarm rippled through the others. The herd quickly picked up the pace of the crossing, but the trouble was only just beginning.
Panic in the Water
A short while later, a second crocodile launched an attack of its own, and that was the moment everything unravelled. The herd fell into a full blown panic.

Buffalo splashed, bellowed and surged through the water, each one desperate to get away from the danger.
Amid the commotion, the first crocodile was not ready to give up. It tried a series of fresh attacks, perhaps sensing that the chaos could work in its favour.

Instead, the situation turned on it completely. As the frantic herd backtracked in a hurry across the river, the crocodile was caught in the stampede and trampled beneath hundreds of kilograms of panicked buffalo.

Safety in Numbers, Until It Isn’t
Cape buffalo are famously tough and are known for sticking together when threatened. A herd can be a formidable force, and lions, the buffalo’s main predator, think twice before taking on a healthy adult in a large group.

Safety in numbers is the herd’s greatest defence, and this footage shows exactly why.
Crocodiles, on the other hand, rely on ambush. Their power comes from surprise and from the water, which gives them the upper hand over animals that are off balance and unable to flee quickly.
River crossings are among the most vulnerable moments in a herd’s day, which is why predators often wait patiently near them.

Of course, nature rarely follows a script. When panic takes hold, a crowd of fleeing buffalo can be just as dangerous as any predator, and this crocodile learned that the hard way.
